Discover district energy
The City of Richmond and Lulu Island Energy Company (LIEC) invite residents of all ages to discover the world of District Energy — a cleaner, more sustainable way to power our community.
Each year, we participate in the Public Works Open House, where visitors can explore informative displays and learn how district energy supports a greener Richmond. We also offer guided facility tours that provide a behind-the-scenes look at how our systems operate and contribute to local sustainability.
Whether you’re a student, educator, professional, or simply curious, we invite you to connect with us and be part of Richmond’s clean energy journey.
Public Works Open House
Each May, City of Richmond hosts the Public Works Open House, a fun and interactive event where residents can meet City staff, enjoy family-friendly activities, and learn more about the essential services that keep Richmond running.
Be sure to stop by the LIEC booth at the next Open House! Whether you’re curious about how district energy works, want to chat with our team, or are looking for fun activities for the kids — we’d love to connect with you and share how we can build a greener future together.

Barn Owl Boxes at the ADEU
LIEC is committed to preserving community wildlife and has constructed two barn owl nesting boxes at the Alexandra DEU. Since 2021, a pair of barn owls has successfully reared 3–5 young each year.
To monitor their activity, motion-activated cameras have been installed on the exterior of both nesting boxes. Footage from the 2025 breeding season will be available on the following website: Richmond.ca/wildlife.

Meet our mascot - Ali the Barn Owl
In 2016, LIEC held a competition to design our mascot at the City of Richmond’s Public Works Open House. After going through many beautiful submissions, the team decided on Kaira D’Angelo’s artwork to become the inspiration for LIEC’s mascot, Ali the Barn Owl.
Congratulations, Kaira!
